How to Set up an Overtime Policy

Last Updated: Aug 17, 2015 12:02PM EDT
  • Log onto your FingerCheck account and go to the “Setup” tab. From the drop down menu on the top left of the page, select “Policies Menu.”
  • From the list that appears, click on “Overtime Policies” and then on the yellow “Add” button to begin building your policy.

  • Start creating your policy by naming it with a code and description and then work your way down to fill out the necessary fields.

  • Code – The code can be anything that helps you distinguish the policy, like “Sales OT” or “40HoursOT.”
  • Description – The description should describe the policy in further detail, especially if you’ve put an abbreviated code. This will help you identify the nature of the policy.
  • Not Allowed – Check to disable this policy.
  • Before Scheduled Start Time – Are you paying overtime for time worked before your employees’ scheduled start time? If so, check this box. (There needs to be a daily rule on this policy for this to take effect. This step comes later.)
  • After Scheduled End Time – Are you paying overtime for time worked after your employees’ scheduled end time? If so, check this box. (Once again there needs to be a daily rule on this policy for this to take effect.)
  • Start Week Day – If you have any weekly or bi-weekly overtime rules you will be building within this policy, select the day the work week will start.
  • Include Paid Break Hours – Would you like to include paid break times within the hours leading up to overtime?
  • Include Paid Holiday Hours – Would you like to include paid holiday hours within the hours leading up to overtime?
  • Include Paid Absence Hours – Would you like to include paid absence times within the hours leading up to overtime?

  • What’s a policy without rules? Click on the gray add button next to Overtime Rules to get started.
  • Overtime Type – Pick an Overtime Type to use for the rule. For instance, “Daily” to apply the rule for each day. Or you can pick “Saturday” to define the rule and how it is applied to Saturday overtime. (You can create as many rules within each policy)
  • Hours Above – Enter the amount of hours from when you want to start counting towards overtime. Would you like overtime to start calculating above 40 hours per week? Or perhaps over 8 hours a day? Enter the hours and make sure they match the Overtime Type you selected.
  • Hours To – The hours at which you'd like the rule to end. You can set this to any value you wish.
  • Division Earning – Select the earning to use for the rule.
  • Is Comp Time – Are you counting the overtime toward the compensatory time? If so, check this box.
  • Comp Time Accrual – Select the accrual policy the comp time is to apply.
  • Start Time/ End Time – If you'd like this rule to take effect only between a certain time frame enter the start and end time.
Click “Apply” to add the rule, and continue adding as many rules as you can. When you are finished, finalize your entries by clicking “Save.” An important note is that these policies will NOT take effect unless they are applied to the master profile. For information on master profiles click here
